Leprechauns, leg warmers, swim lessons and more

On Saturday cousins from Houston invited us over to enjoy the pool and hang out. It was Cookie and Kiss' first time in a "big" pool. They loved it and giggled and laughed. This is Kiss with her Cousin A. Look how gorgeous they both are!
My great friend K. sent Cookie and Kiss "Baby Legs" leg warmers for their birthday. They are terrific for protecting little knees.

Cookie's first rubik's cube...

We all scream for Girl Scout cookies! They are so goooood!

Yummy yum yum

Cookie and Kiss wish you a 2009 filled with the "Luck O' the Irish"

I could only manage the 386 yards!

26 miles 385 yards X 20! That is some kind of impressive to me. What's even more impressive is the man that just finished his 20th marathon....my Dad. Here is what he had to say, in his own words, about running his 20th Marathon in Pasadena, CA.

"I live in Eastern Europe – the country of Ukraine -ten time zones away from Pasadena. My wife and I will fly in from Kyiv (through Paris, Detroit and Madison,WI)arriving at LAX on Saturday March 21 about eight hours prior to the marathon start. If I complete this marathon it will be my 20th. However, my first since a trauma induced subarachnoid hemorrhage sidelined me two and a half years ago. It will also be the first marathon I’ve run since tearing the quadriceps muscle from my knee a year and a half ago. Not to mention (ok, I will) having a hemorrhoidectomy a year ago. That last surgeon was so proud of his work; he said I was a “perfect ass.” Don’t worry, I’ve been given a clean bill of health (physically) and I’ve signed the waiver! I plan to run at five miles per hour considerably slower than the last time I ran a marathon in California which was at Napa Valley in 1993. It will be fun to be among all those physically fit Californians again."

I just finished speaking with Dad. He actually arrived in California only about 6 hours before the Marathon start and was able to manage only 4 hours of sleep. With all of that he managed to not only finish the marathon, but do it without injury. If it were anyone else I would be surprised, but this is a man that can actually tell stories of his near death experience from bad Hippo stew, how he got up and ran home after being hit by a Semi truck, managed to survive a run in with the mafia and the list goes on. Seriously, he makes those angels on his shoulder work overtime!!
Congratulations to Dad and to his sister who ran (and finished) the 5K. Wish we could have been there to cheer for you in person, but we were there in spirit. Love to you!

Happy Birhday!!

Happy 1st Birthday. We started the day with GramA's french toast, Pixie and Bratwurst kisses and snuggles from Mommy, Daddy and Super Nanny. A good way to start a new year. More to come.....

New Car Seats

As only I could do, I agonized over the choice of car seats. There are a TON of choices out there and they range in price from $50 to $300. I knew that they all had to be safe as defined by the US safety standards, but there are a lot of variables from an ease and comfort standpoint. It will not come as a shock to any of you that I read a bizillion reviews, consulted consumer reports and took my own unofficial survey before making my choice. It will also not surprise anyone to know that I got the Britax and fell for the "Cowmooflage" design. My only disclaimer is that they are not actually the most expensive, and they got the best overall reviews. And the cowmooflage is seriosuly cute!!! Check out Kiss and Cookie in their new seats!

Kiss says goodbye to her old ride and takes a trip in the new one.
Cookie prepares to take his last ride in the infant seat....
He really likes the new roomy and comfy Britax "Cowmooflage" seat.
The Babes love the new seats, but Pixie will miss trying to smuggle herself out in the infant carrier.

One more week..no more time left...they're ONE

With only one week left until the big FIRST birthday I figure it is about time for me to face the facts and chronicle the babies 10th month. (So I sat down and started this post...and then couldn't finish it. Month 11 was one of Mommy coming to terms with the marching on of time. Today is the DAY and it is a very very good one!)

Month 10 was one of steady growth and development. There were not major occurrences but rather continuous improvements.

Cookie perfected his crawl and has become very adept. He is now faster than his sister, although his personality usually still lets her race to the finish first! He is a traditional crawler, moving on BOTH hands and knees. He still likes his walker but only for a short time and his preferred form of locomotion is still in Mommy or Daddy's arms.Cookie is a sweet, sweet boy and loves to snuggle and look out at the world from your arms. He continues to be very mellow and tends to get sad rather than mad if he can't figure things out or they aren't going his way. In month 10 his two bottom teeth continued to "come in", but no new teeth appeared on the horizon. He still loves bread and carbs of any kind, but has branched out into fruit as well (a different kind of carb I suppose!). If prodded he'll eat some turkey and cheese, but only if there is no bread or fruit on his tray! The early musings that he may be a Southpaw were further verified as he uses his left hand to do most tasks. Did you know that only 10% of the population is left handed but that 4 of the last 7 presidents were Southpaws (including Obama)? Nether Mom or Dad are leftys but both paternal Grandparents are. We will have to call in the g'rents for some tutoring on "how to's" for the leftys!
Cookie is pulling up and will stand in his crib or holding onto something very solid, but doesn't really seem in any hurry to "cruise" much less walk. Super Okay with me!!

Kiss had a great 10th month as well. She worked on perfecting the sippy cup (but still prefers the bottle), the "cruise" and the Zena Warrior Princess yell. I have to say she is pretty adept at all three!! She really enjoyed pulling up and "walking" along the furniture, Mommy & Daddy's legs, and anything else that would support her unsteady legs. No real steps were taken and she doesn't seem overly inclined to be full-on walking in the immediate future.Kiss has a bib that says "Bossy beyond belief" and in month 10 she tried to live up to this standard. We worked on the word "NO" said in an authoritative and serious manor....we knew she understood when she began to smile and then do exactly what she wasn't suppose to do! Yup, she's a girl alright. I think she takes right after her Daddy!!Month 10 brought a mouth full of teeth. Two bottom and two top teeth were in full evidence. No biting ....yet, but she is something of a wood chipper when it comes to meal times. Language is developing and saying "THAT" and pointing is her very favorite game. She can and does say "Da" for Daddy, but for Mommy just points and says "That". I am trying to get her to say "ALL That"... maybe in a few more months!

Month 10 was a very lovely one. No major Holidays or events. It was very nice to just be and and not be in a rush. Happy 11th month Birthday. We love you.
